In 1975, Ricky's brother, Al Rudd, was working with Bill Champion's team when he heard Bill was looking to retire. Al told Bill that little brother Ricky was a real good race driver and that Bill should give him a chance. Ricky drove 4 races in 1975, with a best finish of 11th at Rockingham

1980 Sanyo
For 1980 along with the #22 and D.K. Ulrich's #40, Rudd drove Nelson Malloch's #7 car at the Firecracker

1983 Emanuel Zervakis #01
Rudd won his first and only race at Dover Downs Raceway in 1983 driving a Zervakis built racecar. In fact many of today's top drivers got their starts in Zervakis Busch and Winston Cup cars including: Geoffrey Bodine, Mark Martin and Dale Jarrett.

1987 Motorcraft
1987 saw a slight dip in results, as the Bud Moore Ford struggled
more than the previous year, but Rudd pounced when Dale Earnhardt
lost power and won the Atlanta 500, then at Dover he notified Bud
Moore that he would move to another team for 1988, and the next
day mopped up the field for an easy win.

1990 Levi Garrett
1990 was the year Rudd signed with Hendrick Motorsports. In his 4 years at Hendrick he won 4 races; Watkins Glen (8/12/90), Darlington (4/7/91), Dover (9/20/92) and Michigan (6/20/93). It was at this race in Michigan, The Miller Genuine Draft 400, that Rudd announced he would be leaving Hendrick Motorsports at the end of the year to form his own team, Rudd Performance Motorsports. He also announced that Tide, his sponsor at Hendrick, would join him, ending a 7 year relationship with Hendrick Motorsports.

On September 13, 1999, after months of speculation, Robert Yates announced signing Ricky Rudd to a deal to pilot the famed #28 Texaco Havoline Ford at the end of the 1999 season. It was also announced that Texaco Havoline had extended their agreement with RYR through 2004 and that the real estate assets of Rudd Performance Motorsports, in Mooresville, NC, had been purchased to house the 28 team. The remaining assets of RPM were sold at an auction conducted at the close of the 1999 season.
