Rudd still haunted by fatal pit accident
November 13, 1991

NASCAR driver Ricky Rudd, who spends much of his life in the public eye, has moments when he hides in his own doubt and pain, the what-ifs nearly overwhelming.
``I deal with it every day,'' Rudd said in reference to the pit road accident last November in which his spinning car killed Bill Elliott's crewman Mike Rich.
``It's something that I'll never forget,'' Rudd said.
Rudd said he's in complete agreement with current NASCAR rules, penalizing drivers who speed through pits and/or miss their marks.
``Who's to say it might not have happened if the rules had been different?'' Rudd said. ``All the what-ifs ultimately don't mean a thing because they can't bring Mike Rich back.''
